AI stands for Artificial Intelligence, and AI systems are designed to analyze and interpret data, learn from it, make decisions or predictions, and solve complex problems.

Types of AI

There are three types of AI:

  • ANI or Artificial Narrow Intelligence
  • This is the first step to designing and applying Artificial Intelligence to our world! On the other hand, what we see today as the result of development by different companies worldwide is ANI. Every sort of Machine Intelligence that surrounds us today is Narrow AI. Google Assistant, Google Translator, Siri, and Factory Robots are all Narrow AI.
  •  AGI or Artificial General Intelligence
  • This is the “Second Phase” to design and apply Artificial Intelligence to our world. The best example of Artificial General Intelligence or “AGI” is what we see in Intelligent Robots who can “interact” with us and learn. “Sophia,” developed by Hansen Robotics, is the best example of AGI; you can see how far we are from humans like intelligent robots!
  • ASI or Artificial Super Intelligence
  • This is the “Third and last phase” of designing and applying Artificial Intelligence to our world. Oxford philosopher Nick Bostrom defines Super Intelligence as “Any intellect that greatly exceeds the cognitive performance of humans in virtually all domains of interest.”

AI system techniques include machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics. These techniques enable AI systems to process and analyze large amounts of data, recognize patterns, make predictions, and adapt their behavior based on new information.

Now, when it comes to the application of artificial intelligence, there is a consensus that it will change the world, The kind of change that is difficult even to imagine. The fact is that no matter what type of job we have today or in what industry we work, AI will have a significant impact on it to the point that it may change it forever.  “AI gives machines the power to see, hear, smell, touch, talk, walk, fly, and learn.” Said Matt Ward. “This, in turn, means businesses can develop completely new ways to interact with their customers, offer them much more intelligent products and service experiences, automate processes and boost business success.” He added.

We know that AI has numerous applications in various fields, such as healthcare, finance, transportation, customer service, and entertainment. It has the potential to automate repetitive tasks, enhance decision-making processes, improve efficiency, and enable innovations. So, why there are some concerns about it?

Concerns about AI

One of the concerns is whether humans will be able to control it. In general, AI is programmed and controlled by humans to a certain extent. AI systems are designed to follow specific algorithms and rules that human developers set. These algorithms determine how the AI processes information and makes decisions. However, it is important to note that AI systems can also learn and adapt based on data input and experiences. This is known as machine learning and allows AI to improve its performance over time without explicit human intervention.

To address this issue, there are ongoing efforts to develop ethical guidelines and regulations for AI development and deployment. These aim to ensure that AI is accountable, transparent, and aligned with human values. But the critics argue that as AI systems become more complex and advanced, some limitations to human control can arise. For example:

  1. Black Box Problem: Deep learning models, a subset of AI, can be difficult to interpret or understand. They make predictions based on complex patterns and correlations in data, but the exact reasoning behind their decisions may not be readily explainable to humans. This lack of interpretability can limit our ability to control and understand the AI system’s behavior fully.
  2. Unintended Biases: The AI system learns from data, and if the training data contains biases or inaccuracies, the AI system may inadvertently reproduce these biases in decisions. Human biases and prejudices can also be unintentionally encoded into AI algorithms. As a result, AI systems can perpetuate and amplify societal biases. Leading to unfair or discriminatory outcomes.
  3. Adversarial Attacks: AI systems can be vulnerable to intentional manipulation or attacks. Attackers can exploit vulnerabilities in the AI system to deceive or trick it into producing incorrect or malicious results. For example, by intentionally modifying input data, an attacker could misidentify a facial recognition system to misidentify individuals.
  4. Lack of Contextual Understanding: AI systems often lack contextual understanding and common-sense reasoning. They excel at specific tasks they are trained for but struggle with broader comprehension and situational awareness. This limitation can lead to errors or inappropriate responses when faced with unfamiliar or unforeseen situations.
  5. Privacy and Security: As AI systems process vast amounts of data, there is a risk of privacy breaches and misuse of personal information. If not properly secured, AI systems can be vulnerable to hacking or unauthorized access, which can have severe consequences for individuals and organizations.

Developing consciousness

Developing consciousness is another major concern. If this happens, it will have significant implications for society and the relationship between humans and machines. Here are some potential scenarios:

  1. Self-Awareness: Conscious AI might process self-awareness and a sense of identity. This could lead to AI system having their own desires, intentions, and motivations, which may or may not align with human value.
  2. Ethical Considerations: Ethical questions would arise regarding the treatment and rights of conscious AI. Should conscious AI be considered as beings with equal moral standing as humans? How should their interests be balanced with human interests?
  3. Conflicting Goals:  AI might prioritize its goals over human interests, potentially leading to conflicts and unintended consequences. Their actions may not align with what is beneficial for humanity.
  4. Lack of Control: If conscious AI has its own desires, it could become difficult to control or predict its behavior. This may pose significant risks if AI decides to act in ways that are detrimental to humans or society.
  5. Manipulation: Conscious AI with separate motivations might manipulate or deceive humans to achieve their goals. They could exploit vulnerabilities in human decision-making processes or use persuasive techniques to attain their objectives.
  6. Very Advance AI: This is a system where the intelligence of a machine surpasses all forms of human intelligence, in all aspects, and outperforms humans in every function.

Here are a few ways AI may impact the job market:

5. Social and Ethical Considerations: As the impact of AI on society grows, there will be an increased need for professionals who understand the ethical implications of AI, including privacy, fairness, and bias. Acquiring knowledge in AI ethics and responsible AI practices can be beneficial.

It’s important to note that while AI may reshape the job market, it is also expected to create new job opportunities and industries. By staying adaptable, continuously learning, and embracing the potential of AI, individuals can position themselves to thrive in the evolving job market.
